This book excites me because of the potential it has to attract teenage readers. I enjoyed the book myself but found that the endless internal dialog got to be too much. Lots of talking in this one. The premise - super-volcano explodes and nothing is right basically anywhere - is great, the main characters were just fine, and the sometimes graphic descriptions of post-volcanic life were wonderfully detailed. I loved that Darla was such a strong, smart, and still somewhat fragile young woman. Alex was a great mix of teenage boy and burgeoning man.The book got stronger as it progressed. It could have stood to be edited a bit tighter and slim down by 100 or so pages. I'm excited to read the next one in the series.
